The German radio market is highly fragmented. It is dominated by regional and local players, but also by private networks, which reach 42.3 percent of the market.

Besides news, music, sports and entertainment, Germany has a huge number of radio stations. One of the most popular ones is Deutschlandradio, which airs information and talk shows.

Its broadcasts are available online, on the Radio Deutschland App. The app allows users to tune in to one hundred different German radio stations. The app is optimised for 3G and Wi-Fi networks.

Although Deutschlandradio is a national public service radio broadcaster, its coverage varies from region to region. At the end of the year 2019, the station's radio signal covers 96% of the country's area.

In recent years, the company has made significant investments in its terrestrial digital distribution. This includes a nationwide single frequency network (SFN), which is on VHF channel 5C. Previously, it distributed its programs via FM and AM.

On March 21, RTL Radio Deutschland announced the launch of its new "Audio Now" platform. This is a non-linear, professionally produced audio platform that aims to cater to the increasing need for individualized audio content in Germany.

Unlike most international stations, RTL Radio Deutschland expects its "Audio Now" to be completely free of charge. A press release published yesterday stated that the company believes the project is unique in Germany.

For those who prefer to listen to traditional radio, the classic Radio Deutschland will remain in place. The company's managing director Nina Gerhardt believes the opportunity lies in balancing media needs.
